This is the first 18 inch sub I've ever owned. I removed the grill type cloth that surrounds it so that I could see that massive woofer at work, I think it looks better with it off! I have a huge living room and this power house really does an incredible job. I have it hooked to the sub output of my pre/pro. The LFE channel on DVD's is no match for this beast. The bass is clean, powerful, and LOW, LOW! I've had it for 2 years and have no plans to replace it.
This monster will handle anything I throw at it now and in the future. This is the first 18 inch sub I've ever owned.

It draws so much current that you just can't plug it in to the 'switched' outlet on your receiver. I have owned this sub since '95 and 3 months after I purchaced it the amplifier went haywire, and a mechanical rattle from the speaker itself. I hope their quality has improved since then. If they have improved the quality, I would reccomend it even though it is not the tightest bass around.
(Sorry 3 Stars on my experience of this speaker). At that price you would expect a great product.

(Sorry 3 Stars on my experience of this speaker). I replaced the M&K with the Def Tech 1800. The 1800 is hooked to the sub out for LFE.
I have the PSB 3i wired into the fronts to relieve the front speakers of the frequencies below 50 hz. The Def Tech moves plenty of air and works very well for the LFE channel. If you can get your wife to okay such a massive unit, get one. Don't let not having an auto on bother you. It doesn't draw very much current, I leave it on.
Sitting there powered up will not hurt anything. I paid $1180 plus sales tax from a local dealer who ordered it in from Def Tech after he called Def Tech for a competitive price.

Concentrated bass — this compact cube will amaze you Definitive's Technology's SuperCube 4000 subwoofer proves that powerful bass doesn't require a big box. The tried-and-true SuperCube formula features an active woofer and two same-sized passive radiators, all driven by a brawny 1,200-watt amplifier.
This sub will fill your room with sound while taking up less than a cubic foot of space. Rock-solid bass requires rock-solid construction The SuperCube 4000 sub uses a new class of high-efficiency amplifier to bring 1,200 watts to bear. Its clean muscle is preceded by a 56-bit DSP pre-amp stage that kills distortion before it ever reaches the amp, let alone your ears. The SuperCube's 8' woofer is pressure-coupled to two 8' passive radiators. This driver array gives the 4000 the capability for far greater speed, musicality, and control than the typical large single-woofer sub. The ultra-stiff woofer is encased in an incredibly rigid basket engineered to hold the massive magnet structure and large voice coil in absolute alignment. The non-resonant front and back panels are nearly 2' thick and use multiple internal bracings to make sure that you hear clean bass without sound-muddying vibrations.
Flexible inputs and advanced controls Line-level and speaker-level inputs let you connect this sub to just about any audio system. The continuously variable low-pass crossover allows you to precisely control the frequencies that your subwoofer handles. And the disappearing display lets you monitor the 4000's settings while you adjust them with the included wireless remote. Features Definitive Technology SuperCube Powered Sub: The Definitive Technology SuperCube 4000 is a compact, high-quality powered subwoofer intended for use in a music or home theater system. The SuperCube 4000 powered subwoofer allows for easy, seamless integration into almost any two-channel or multichannel speaker system; delivering true, accurate, & extremely deep bass in any room. The Definitive Technology SuperCube 4000 features a 1200-watt digital amplifier, 56-bit DSP, 8' woofer with dual 8' passive radiators, & an included wireless remote control.
The SuperCube 4000 is finished in a piano-gloss black lacquer finish with a black non-removable cloth grille. 1200W Digital Tracking Amplifier: The Definitive Technology SuperCube 4000 features a 1200-watt (RMS) digital tracking amplifier that is optimized for real world power demands to deliver low distortion & high output. As well as producing high continuous power to cleanly reproduce sustained bass (down to 16 Hz), this all-new Definitive Technology digital amp has a high crest factor to deliver considerably higher power during short, transient peaks such as bass drum kicks & on-screen artillery blasts. You'll enjoy high volume, high impact, & low distortion bass from your favorite action/adventure films & TV shows without sacrificing the smooth response & quick precision needed for music. Note: As well as being powerful, the new Definitive Technology digital amp is environment-friendly. The amplifier goes into idle mode after less than 30 minutes of no audio signal.
When in idle mode the amp draws a mere 1/2 Watt or less of current, meeting international standards for low energy consumption. 56-Bit Digital Signal Processor (DSP): The Definitive Technology SuperCube 4000 has an integrated 56-bit Digital Signal Processor (DSP) that extends & improves the bass response. Multiband digital protection systems tightly monitor & control the woofer system to prevent distortion & woofer damage at ultra-high volume levels with a minimum of audible artifacts. In contrast to simpler one-band compression/limiting circuits used in competing subwoofer amp designs, the Definitive Technology SuperCube 4000 features a Multiband Dynamic Range Optimizer (M-DRO) that divides the frequency range into multiple bands.
If the DSP detects an overdrive condition in the upper bass range, it applies just the right amount of compression & to prevent distortion to just that range without compressing the low bass, thereby vastly reducing the audible compression artifacts. As a result, the SuperCube 4000's bass is always tight, highly detailed, & distortion free.
High Definition Drivers: The powerful, high-definition drivers used in the new SuperCubes were specifically engineered for their task: to deliver rock-solid low distortion bass, reaching down to the lowest frequencies (16-200Hz), with an outstanding quality of superior transient response ('tightness'). The special ultra-stiff cones are joined to specially formulated surrounds & long-throw voice coils & spiders. The incredibly rigid cast aluminum baskets are engineered to hold the massive magnet structures & large voice coils in absolute alignment. The high temperature voice coils are made of aluminum wound with triple insulated ultra-pure copper wire & baked in epoxy for superior power handling & reliability. Passive Radiator Design: The SuperCube 4000 features an 8' subwoofer driver pressure coupled to two 8' Ultra Low Bass Radiators. The total piston area is greater than a 12-inch diameter woofer but with far greater speed, musicality, & control than a single large diameter woofer could ever deliver.
Non-Resonant Cabinet: The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Resonance & vibration can add unwanted distortion as well as drain away important acoustical energy from the system.
Definitive's subwoofer enclosures have been specifically engineered to be totally inert & vibration free, to ensure you of absolutely pure sonic reproduction. The front and rear panels are nearly 2' thick & the cabinet incorporates multiple internal braces to ensure total solidity. The SuperCube 4000 is finished in piano-gloss black lacquer finish. Ultra-Compact Design: The SuperCube 4000 measures only 11.0625' (w) x 11.875' (h) x 12.5' (d). Measurements include rubber-feet & cables.
Interchangeable Feet: The SuperCube 4000 comes with 4 rubber-feet & 4 spiked-feet for safe & secure placement of the powered subwoofer on your carpet or hardwood floors. The spiked feet add approximately 0.125' of height to the powered subwoofer. Placement: There are some general guidelines that you should use when locating the powered subwoofer. For best results, place the subwoofer on the same side of the room as your front speakers. For maximum output, the subwoofer should be placed in a corner or against the wall, leaving approximately 2' to 4' clearance between the powered subwoofer and the wall(s). Corner placement will increase the powered subwoofer's output.
An acoustic effect called 'standing waves' or 'room modes' may cause uneven bass at various locations throughout the room. This phenomenon is a function of the dimensions of the room and not due to the design of the powered subwoofer. Protection Circuit: To prevent accidental damage to the subwoofer from overdriving the system, the SuperCube 4000 features an internal overload protection circuit, which will turn the subwoofer off or down when overdriven or overheated & will then resume normal operation after a few minutes. Controls Subwoofer Controls: A complete array of controls allow the SuperCube 4000 to be perfectly integrated with any stereo or multi-channel audio system, and tuned for optimum performance in any room. Front-Panel LCD: A front-panel LCD alphanumeric character display (red) indicates control settings automatically & turns off when not in use.
The front-panel LCD indicates Volume level, Crossover frequency, Phase, EQ mode, & Night mode. Remote Control: In addition to the SuperCube 4000's rear-panel controls, the powered subwoofer comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation. The remote includes Power, Volume, Crossover, Phase, EQ, Night Mode, Mute, & Display controls. Note: The remote operates off of a single 3V lithium battery (CR2025). Volume Control: The SuperCube 4000 features a rear-mounted push-button volume control (0-40). This control is used to raise or lower the output level of the subwoofer in relation to the other speaker in your system. Note: There is also a mute button on the remote control to zero the volume level quickly.
Variable Low-Pass Crossover: The Definitive Technology powered subwoofer features a continuous variable low-pass filter control on the back-panel. This filter is continuously variable between 40 and 150 Hz. It 'rolls-off' (24dB/oct) the high-frequency response of your subwoofer so only low-frequencies below the desired setting will be heard. This low-pass filter control is used to obtain the optimum transition between the subwoofer and your main speakers. Variable Phase Alignment: The powered subwoofer features a rear-panel push-button phase control (0/90/180/270-degrees).
This control is used to perfectly blend the output of your subwoofer with your main speakers to compensate for any possible problems due to placement constraints. EQ: You can toggle between 4 specific preset equalization settings to suit your music/movie soundtrack or preference. EQ1: Maximizes deepest octave bass response at the sacrifice of maximum volume level (good choice for pipe organ & symphonic recordings). This setting should not be used a high volume levels. EQ2: Raises relative level of mid-bass frequencies (good choice for hip-hop & rock music, or movie soundtracks with weak bass).
EQ3: Raises the level of mid- & ultra-low bass frequencies (a great setting for movies when not played at ultra-high volume levels). EQ4: The best setting to use when achieving maximum volume levels with minimal distortion is more important than reproducing the lowest frequencies. Night Mode: Night Mode applies dynamic range compression to the woofer so that the loudest bass in a movie doesn't get loud enough to wake the parents, kids, or spouse at night. Auto Turn-On Circuit: The powered subwoofer has a special power circuit which automatically turns the powered subwoofer on when a signal is fed to the loudspeaker and turns it off when there is no signal present, so it does not require an on-off switch.
LED Indicator: The red LED on the back panel of the powered subwoofer will light up when a signal is sensed and the amplifier turns on. It will automatically turn off with the powered subwoofer, a little while after the signal is discontinued. Connections Line-Level & Speaker Level Connections: The Definitive Technology SuperCube 4000 powered subwoofer has a complete range of inputs & outputs to allow easy and effective hookup to any system. Both (high) speaker level & low-level inputs are provided in case you do not have a subwoofer output. In addition, the SuperCube 4000 has a separate direct-in LFE low-level input (which bypasses the crossover network). LFE Input: The LFE input on the SuperCube 4000 is a mono-RCA input which is not affected by the subwoofer's low-pass filter or low-pass crossover control. It is designed to connect the SuperCube 4000 to a receiver which features a dedicated subwoofer output which features its own low-pass crossover filter.
Low-Level Inputs: If your receiver does not feature a dedicated subwoofer output, but does feature stereo RCA outputs, you can use the SuperCube 4000's stereo RCA low-level inputs (which provide its own dedicated variable low-pass crossover circuit) to connect the subwoofer to your receiver, Speaker Level In: The Speaker Level inputs (5-way binding posts) are designed to be used on receivers or amplifiers that do not incorporate any RCA type subwoofer outputs. If your receiver is equipped with an RCA type subwoofer outputs, these speaker level inputs should not be utilized. Remote Connections: The Definitive Technology SuperCube 4000 features 12V trigger & IR remote inputs. 12V Trigger Input: 3.5mm jack which connects to the 12V trigger output of an AV receiver for one-button system turn-on. IR Input: 3.5mm jack used to connect an optional IR remote repeater (sold separately), when the powered subwoofer is hidden & cannot be operated from the included IR remote control. Detachable AC Power Cord: The SuperCube 4000 includes a detachable 7' AC power cord.
The SuperCube 4000 must be plugged into a 120V, 60Hz electrical socket (use an unswitched outlet if possible). Have Definite Technology Speakers Mithoon S. Nov 23, 2018 I chose this item based on the positive reviews and sale price.
Crutchfield customer service is second to none. PAUL Jun 05, 2018 I needed a new subwoofer, I have Def Tech speakers, and this was a great price.
JOSEPH Feb 06, 2018 Had a SuperCube III for the past 7 years. The amp failed once at about the 3 year point, a couple of months out of warranty, and DT sent me a new one for free. The amp just failed again. Decided to upgrade to a similar DT product. Daniel Dec 28, 2017 it's small and packs some power, and gets good reviews.
Tracey Sep 21, 2017 Functionality & size Anna Aug 13, 2017 Precise and powerfull low frequencies in a compact enclosure. Walter Jul 28, 2017 It will work my Denon System and my DT speakers Gregory Jun 11, 2017 I wanted hard hitting sub Harold Apr 03, 2017 Space was at a premium and all the reviews I could find were very positive. Crutchfield advisors Duffy and Daniel were helpful and I know that I will get good tech support when the package arrives. Alfred Jan 31, 2017 Low frequency capability and small size. Jeffrey Jan 08, 2017 I picked this item because some technicians advised me Ha Ngoc Dec 19, 2016 Good reviews and remote control Richard Nov 21, 2016 I already own a DT SC-2000 and I love it the loud, tight bass coming from the little subwoofer. I can only imagine what the new DT SC-4000 with its larger speakers and 1,299 watt amp will be like. I can't wait to hear and feel what both feel like in action!
M Feb 27, 2016 big sound out of a small box. Jeff Feb 25, 2016 Better match for my definitive speakers sarath Dec 13, 2015 Show More 3 questions already asked. May be too late for your thread but as a Bose Pro dealer (who is also a happy Crutchfield customer) it depends upon which Bose sub you ordered w/ your L1 system (and which version of L1 it is). The Series 2 systems have a line out that you could attach to any amp/sub system BUT their B2 subwoofer kills and isn't very expensive. I'd pick it over the DT sub just because it's made for live sound and is more rugged from a case perspective. We tested it in-house against their 12' commercial sub (the MB12) and it, quite surprisingly, was nearly exactly as loud for WAY less money and is a direct plugin to the L1.
IF you L1 is an older model there's a firmware upgrade required so it knows the difference - that's the only caveat. Andrew Oct 11, 2015 I don't think so, but I would ask Bose. Bose systems don't usually alow anything other then their own to work. Call them I'm sure they will be truthful. William Jan 22, 2015 Well if your setup has rca sub out it should work.
And also the supercube 4000 is 1200w rms if I'm not mistaken so it will provide lots of accurate bass. I don't recommend outdoor use of the sub but that's up to you. NANCY Jan 22, 2015 I believe that you cannot connect anything else to a Bose System as they are proprietary to thier own products. You would need to have a seperate 'sub' or LFE output from the receiver to run any additional sub woofer. About the Definitive 4000, designed to work well with an indoor home theater as well as increase bass for music, outdoor sound systems create a different element for sound and usually need different equipment.
Rodney Jan 22, 2015 I m not familiar with the Bose system so I would not know about connectivity. Also not sure about using it outdoors.it is the most musical sub I ve ever owned.
DON Jan 22, 2015. Sorry for the late response. The SuperCube 4000 is more than adequate as it relates to both power and range. The 4000 is surprisingly powerful in a small footprint. Pictures on your wall will move when the volume is cranked up!
MICHAEL Mar 04, 2014 Don't let it's small size fool you. It will pack a hug punch BRAD Feb 26, 2014 I don't go for loud, but once upon a time I did.this is the best sub I've ever owned for music reproduction. I would think it would be great in at any level. It doesn't take much volume to 'feel' it. DON Feb 24, 2014 I really like this Sub but I can not answer your question as this is my first sub and have nothing to compare too. Dave Feb 24, 2014 no! LORI Feb 24, 2014.
